Preliminary Task Planning
Here is a picture of George drawing and creating the storyboard, it was important to ensure that we had the storyboard as accurate of possible, including the different shots and angles.
In this picture Megan is reading over the script so we can make improvements to it.

Opening Sequence Analysis- The Notebook(Romantic)
Camara Shots
Most of the shots in this scene are close ups, these show the intanicy of their relationship, if all the shots were long shots it would take the focus away from thier love, and show that they are not that important to one and other by having as many close ups as possble it shows the audicne that these two people should be our only focus. There are however a few long shots, for example the extreme long shot of them rowing in the rain, this now gives the audience a sense of where the couple are and what they are doing.
Mise en Scene
The contrast of the two characters costumes can tell us alot about them. The woman wearing a blue dress, with a pinned up do with sutle make up shows that either her or her family are wealthy compaered to her male compain who is wearing a white undertop,(untaucked) with a ungromed beard, by showing the contrasts of these two people, it portrays to the auidnce that anyone from any background can find love. These clothes are typivcal of the 1940/50's, helping the audince get a better understand of the film.
Both actors give the impression that they love eachother but are somehow unable to express this, we can tell this by the silence during the boat ride, by the way the women is sitting we can tell she is very closed of from the man for unknown reason(shown later in the scene).Again thier behavoiur are very typival of the 50s men and woman were not expected to be in intimante in public.
This clip uses natural lighting due to te fact they are outside they were able to make use of the natural light.
The one noticable prop is the boat, which transports the couple around the lake.
Sound
There is alot of sound in this clip from the rain to the orcastrated music, all of which is used effectly.
The thunder that starts as they paddle back to shore may have ment to foreshaddow the argument they are about to have, it may also resemble how one minuete the couple are fine one minuate and hate each other the next (proinant in thre rest of the film).
The oracstra music during the rain is subtle and suits the scene, the music complement inner feelings of both parties.
The music becomes more prominate as they become more physical, showing the lust between them, but at the same time is still soft and gentle unlike the horror.
As the love scene arrives the music fades away so were are listening to the actors heavy breathing, which is very effective, it again shows the audience the passion between them.
The music communicates to audience the love they share eventhrough rough times which may be represented by rain.
Edtitng
Again the editing is sutble which compliments the scene beautifully, the music fades in and out when needed to either hightlight the charachters feelings or the feelings they share.
Opening sequence analysis- Jennifer's body(Horror)
Camera Shots The first shot in this scene is a two shot close up, of Jennifer and Colin kissing giving the audience a false scene of security thinking it would be a love scene. The next shot is a single close up of Jennifer face showing the changing of her eyes, showing the audience what the scene will actually focus on.Then another close up of Collin's face showing his reaction to her change.A medium shot is then used to show the cutting of Collin's hand and then both. A long shot then shows the physical power of Jenifer. In this scene there are a variety of different shots to show the scene and emotions of each character.
Mise en Scene The costumes are very basic, it is the scenery this is effective, the sheets, small candles with work boards all add to the eeriness horror of the scene. The two actors really make this scene. The male shows how frightened and scared he is while the women shows her supernatural side. The changing of eyes, the fangs and deformation of the body shows that their is a more sinister side to the film/character. The scenery and minimal costumes suit both the movie and the scene, by keeping it minimal the whole focus is on the characters and murder that is about to ensue.
Sound Unlike the comedy the horror has a sinister music with a deep base feel, the sharpness of the cutting(diegetic) sound adds to the creepiness of the scene, the cracking of the bones is also very sharp giving the audience a physical pain factor that they (the audience) could relate too. The slithering sound when her eyes change give the audience not only an image in which they can see but the sound helps them to relate to her physical being. Most of the sounds only the audience could here (non-diegetic). There are on screen sounds as well as off, we can see him cut his hand(on screen sound). As Collin is ripped apart by Jennifer there is a deep base music to add to the ambiance. The ego of Jennifer's voice 'I need you helpless' puts the audience in Collins mental/physical state so we( the auidence) become Collin, it shows us how he is disoriented due to the braking of his bones and been thrown to the floor.
Editing
There is minimal editing in this clip, it adds to the fast pace/thrilling sequence that this scene entails, if there was fancy transitions for example dissolving pixels it would take the attention away from the chaos, the minimal transitions help the scene, they were used affectedly so the attention is all on the killing.Sunday, 13 October 2013
Opening Sequence Analysis - ' TheHangover' (Comedy)
Camera Shots
The first shot it a wide over the shoulder shot, establishing the scenes location. The over the holders shot show a police officers uniform, suggesting to us that the three characters are in police interview. The closing of the door brings in the next shot which is a long shot showing the main characters in this scene. There are many medium shots in this scene, focusing on specific things/people for example the effect of stun gun on all three characters (Stu,Alan and Phil) another example is the close up of the officers, showing their emotional rage towards the three men. These shots are appropriate for the scene because the scene is all about the emotion, an extreme long shot for example would not be appropriate because it would not show the emotion as well.
Mise-en- scene
The most prominent items are costumes are the officers uniform, showing the power/authority they have over the other three men. Stu,Alan,Phil are dressed in the same clothes they wore the previous night (earlier in the film) showing they are untidy and lower than the police officers. All lighting in this clip is superficial lighting because it is inside a police station which has little natural light in.
As far as the actors go in this scene there are two 'groups' so to speak. There is the two police officers who seem vindictive and spiteful, who seem not to care/worry about upholding the law an twist it so it suits them, an example is when they use the three men to show children how to taser someone, this is not police practise. Then you have the second the three men who are confused about their own situation and are trying to piece their night together (seen later in the film).
There are minimal props used in this scene you have the clipboard held by the male police officer, this is an extra thing for the audience to look at but has little importance to the plot. Then there is the taser which is used on Stu,Alan and Phil, this creates maximum effect because you can not only see the taser and its effect on the men but you are also able to hear it. A taser is a typical thing for an American police officer to be carrying but not in the way this officer is.
Sound There is little sound in this clip apart from the characters talking(Diegetic). The first thing we hear is off screen which is the closing and opening of the door, then after about a minute and a half there is some sort of jazzy music with a percussion that gives it a kind eery but upbeat feel, suggesting something bad/funny is about to happen, only the audience can hear this music(Non Diegetic). On the next shot you have the sound of the stun gun and then the music/sounds gets louder as the children aim at the men and meet its peak as the taser is fired at Alan, the music becomes more intense and sinister each child gears up and aims.
Editing
There is no flash editing in this clip and you don't expect there to be, even in a comedy, each shot blends nicely into one and other, as the transitions happen you get an idea of what is about to happen.

Opening sequence evaluations A/S examples.
I really liked this small clip- especially as its a romantic comedy, it looks really professional (as professional as an A/S clip could be) i would probably give the film a 54 out 60 purely because it is hard to find faults in the opening, it is obvious it has the characteristics of a level four piece, the camera angles are varied, the titles are appropriate for the genre conventions, the mise-en-scene is also relatively well done for the genre conventions. The park is a typical place for a romantic heart to heart as well as the clothing adds to the intimacy of their relationship. Also the varied shots including a pan, medium shots and close all add up to the mark I have given.
"Year of the Serpent" is quite possibly one of my favourite films from the A/S media groups, i find it really interesting how they create the confusion for the audience, we feel really disoriented and don't have a clear idea(the enigma code) why is there a man in the air vent? The genres/ mise-en-scene of a thriller are well presented here for example the clothing ( in black) shows/suggesting the man is mysterious, this also adds to the level 4, the camera angles are almost perfect, there is little shaking and the stability of the filming is so good. Adding the music, i believe the piece would get 56/60.

Film Representations
Who/What is being represented in the opening?
The first thing being represented is Scottish myths and a typical Scottish family who own a kingdom. With a young girl who does not want to be conformed to her families traditions.
How is this being represented?
The Scottish myths are being represented by the strong Scottish accent with the shots of the stones and mystical mountains, with the blue mist s this all adds to the mystery. The typical Scottish family is being represented by them all having ginger hair sitting round a large wooden table eating meat, we can tell they are Scottish not just buy their actions but the shots of the woodlands and lakes. The presentation of the young girl who does not want to inform to her families traditions is being presented by her slumping in the chair talking about wanting freedom
Is there evidence of Dyer or Barthes’ theories in this opening? Justify, using detailed examples.
There are hints of Barths theory in 'Brave' for example the magical blue mist in Scotland- Scotland is stereotypical very nitty gritty so for the blue mist makes Scotland see magical full of wonder which is far from the truth, although beautiful there is no magic-this makes 'Brave' seem fluffy and magical.

How was the use of camera shots?

Use of editing?

Use of lighting?

Overall success of video

Most of the shots where pretty good apart from the shakiness of them. You could tell that the camera was hand held.
|
The editing effects are used well, they used dissolve to get the right shot of the feet they also used the colour emboss to make it more like the original which is very effective.
|
They were filming outside so the only lighting they used was natural.
|
The overall video is great, it is very similar to the original, you can tell that they took a lot of time to produce this. The only thing i suggest is to find a stabiliser for the camera.
|
Lara Dom
|
The very first shot is very shaky, its hard to focus on Dom with his head being cropped out of the shot. Apart from this the shots are very still and focused, with each shot close to that of the original it is very good.
|
The cartoon effect that they used is very effective, they have taken into consideration the original clip and reproduced this on their own. They also used the slow motion tool, although it does not suit some aspects of the Juno opening it is appropriate for others, they seem to have mastered this concept very well.
|
They were filming outside so the only lighting they used was natural.
|
The overall video is mixed they have great shots with the correct length of the original but they also have some scenes in the wrong order, this is a small mistake that they could easily rectify. All in the piece is good, small adjustment need to be made in order for it get better.

Compared to others the very first shot is extremely stable is obvious they used a stabiliser. They also put in the extra detail for example 'the runner' this is not in any other clips, so its refreshing to see they considered the original. The only thing I would suggest is the ending, which is very abrupt, if they managed to smoothed it then it would be fantastic.
|
They editing their piece well; the shots were well timed and considered the original. They used an effect witch made the clip more of a cartoon than it would be if the effect was not used.
They also used different transitions to break up the shots which I thought was done effectively.
| They were filming outside so the only lighting they used was natural. |
The overall video was the best I have seen. Its precise timing along with with the different transitions brought the clip all together, the fact that they timed it along to the original helped tremendously One thing they could improve on was the smoothness of the ending. It ended abruptly if this was smoother the clip would be amazing.

Like the others the others some shots are very shaky, this shows that a stabiliser was not used during the making. One shot due to the shaking Megan's head was cut of for a small duration however the shots were clear and precise, mimicking that of the original.
|
They used one effect called 'push' for the foot shot. Apart from that I do not think they used any other effect.
| They were filming outside so the only lighting they used was natural. |
Overall I think the clip was a good effort, they found an effect that worked for what they wanted. They had the shots in the correct order and for the right amount of time. Overall a good job.

Juno Opening Sequence reflection
Group- James Clifford,Becky Stanway and Emma Rolfe
What did you learn about filming and editing?
I learnt that when using the camera the holder must have a stable hand, as evident in our film most shots are very shaky due to the fact that we had nothing stable holding the camera. We also found it extremely difficult to get the precise shots for the right amount of time, we kept referring to the video to make sure we had the correct angles. We also learnt what shots were needed when for example 'long shot', 'extreme close up' and 'mid long shot' to name a few. I also learnt that it easier to have over shot and cut it then to have under shot and go out and re shoot.Did you use any useful effects?
Whilst editing we only used one effect, 'Cineon Converter' this effect made the clip more of a cartoon which mimicked the Juno opening. What went well in terms of editing?
In terms of editing there was a lot of cropping and moving clips about because we filmed out of sequence so we had to move clips to the correct part of the sequence. We tried to get the clip length and accuracy of the shot as close to the opening of Juno as possible, this was very time consuming because we had to watch the Juno clip then watch ours and figure out what bits need cutting. At this point we were very lucky to have overshot so we had enough footage, it was also another change to get to grips with using Premiere and all its features. What could of gone better?
I feel that the transition of our Juno could of gone better. Our shots jump from one to the next. The Juno trailer shots despite or slide into one and other. We were unable to tilt left and right and pan. Another thing that could of gone slightly better is the cameras stillness. Most shots were very shaky, we could of used a stabiliser to keep the shots still.
